Nala House in Nairobi, Kenya | Apartment Review

We had only planned to stay in Nairobi for 2 days. Having spent 8 days in Mombasa, we felt like 2 days was enough to explore the capital city – Nairobi. We looked for hotels in Nairobi, but we decided an apartment would be more suitable for our party size. We decided to choose somewhere near Jomo Kenyatta airport to stay, just in case traffic was against us on the way back. We looked through Agoda, but we found the ideal place on Booking.com.

Nala House was a short distance from the airport, roughly 5-8 minutes drive. So we got a taxi after arriving at Jomo Kenyatta Airport. There were so many taxi drivers waiting outside to charge you tourist prices!

I beg you… please negotiate! We were charged 2000 KES, and when I rejected that offer, the taxi driver quickly reduced it to 1000 KES. Even 1000 KES was above the price we should have paid, (bearing in mind the hotel was so close by,) but we were way too tired to continue to negotiate so we took that price. Uber is widely available, and we only realised later that day, so we took Uber everywhere else, even upon our return to the airport, which was much cheaper.

We arrived at our apartment and my first thoughts were that the location was ideal, but it did remind me much of London. It was fairly quiet, and was very different from our apartment in Mombasa

Gaining Access to our Apartment

Upon our arrival we entered the block of flats, we accessed our keys and made multiple attempts to open our door… but after a number of unsuccessful attempts, I had to contact our host Judith. Judith was very helpful, and she sent the security guard to help us gain access. The security guard helped us to manage the lock that seemed to work in a mysterious way!

Once we got inside, we were pleasantly surprised. Our apartment was very clean, modern and comfortable. We had a working machine, two bedrooms, two showers, a living room, and even an outdoor area to dry our clothes. It was more than O.K for 2 nights.

My bed was comfy, but other members of our party didn’t feel the same. Little bits could have been improved, and we explained that to Judith, and she was very receptive. She was very thankful that we chose to stay at her apartment, and she contacted me personally. I must say, I was pleasantly surprised and very chuffed.

Nearby Amenities and Restaurants

It was all good until we got hungry, there weren’t any local restaurants (that we could find) The apartment was very close to the highway, so that meant we had to take an uber or some form of transport, so luckily Uber Eats was available and we settled for ordering a KFC takeaway! KFC was good, nothing like the one in London! Crispy, Spicy and Fresh.

Downstairs, we had a corner shop, a fruit and veg shop, and even a hairdressers! Overall, our stay at Nala House was pleasant. We felt safe, comfortable, and impressed with how speedily Judith replied to our messages. We were able to reach her over the phone whenever we had any questions, and we even asked for a last minute late check out which was thankfully granted.

Here are my ratings for Nala House:

Cleanliness: 9/10

Comfort: 7/10

Host: 8.5/10
