ETHIOPIAN AIRLINES – (LONDON – ADDIS ABABA) | FLIGHT REVIEW
The New Spirit of Africa
When we were looking for flights, Ethiopian Airlines was an airline I did not consider. Simply because it wasn’t widely recommended, nor had I known anyone that had used them before. Although flight prices with Ethiopian Airlines were much cheaper, familiarity became my priority over expenses.
I wanted to use an airline I had used before, or that was widely recommended, so after a few months of scouring the internet for the best deals.
I thoroughly contradicted myself… and booked with Air France.
Air France is an airline I had used before, wasn’t too keen on, and said I’d never use them again, but my income was low, and they were the cheapest I could find at the time.
So when my Air France flight was cancelled, and I had gotten over sulking about the 14 plus hour delay, and was rebooked with Ethiopian Airlines, I was secretly excited – looking forward to travelling with an airline I hadn’t used before.
Marking its Territory with First Impressions
Checking In was quick and easy. We checked in online as usual using our mobiles and downloaded a copy of our boarding passes. Ethiopian Airlines did request a copy of our visa, so we just uploaded our ETA.
The Gates were opened at 4.30 pm, a little earlier than scheduled. We headed straight to drop off our bags, and once I boarded, I felt at ease. The Ethiopian Airlines staff were friendly and accommodating.
My first impressions were that the plane was a good size, not too small, and not too huge. The plane was cleaned well, and comfortable – with a good amount of leg room, ‘very impressive’ I thought.
We settled in and shortly after, and I fell asleep. We all did. We woke up just in time for tea, and food followed shortly after.
Tasty and Tantalizing? Or Plain and Simple?
We received our first meal which I believe was lunch. Lunch was green beans, mashed potatoes, and a beef pot pie which had pickled onions in! Accompanied by a side salad, a bread roll, crackers and a glass of orange juice.
At least we were fed well. The beef pot pie was not my favourite but it was edible. The green beans and the mash were O.K, and I was thankful it was enough to fill my stomach.

On our second flight from Addis Ababa to Nairobi, we had dinner. I was eager to see what we were having. It was between chicken or beef, and seeing as though I’d just had beef for lunch, I decided to go for chicken. Dinner was Chicken, rice and a chickpea salad, with another bread roll. We were also given some cookies for dessert.
Making time for Dinner
The chicken and rice was solid 6/ 10. It was O.K. I’m not a fan of chickpeas so I didn’t try them. The dessert cookies were good, so good, my little man stole them off me! After dinner, I put on a good movie, but then fell asleep shortly after.

I arrived at my destination safely, the pilot spoke in English (which was good for me) and I received my luggage on time. Ethiopian airlines have some very affordable airfares, so don’t knock them until you’ve tried them – you might be pleasantly surprised!
The flight was smooth, and the staff were very accommodating. Overall the food was decent, and I would most definitely travel with Ethiopian Airlines again, because I felt safe.
I can honestly say that Ethiopian Airlines have exceeded my expectations with the flight, schedule, the cleanliness, and the friendliness of the staff. I would definitely use them again!
