10 BEST THINGS TO DO IN MOMBASA, KENYA

Now, however long you stay in this beautiful city, there’s certainly so many things you can do in Mombasa. Now, of course I had an itinerary prepared, but delays, mishaps, flight cancellations and even illnesses got in the way of checking everything off our Kenyan bucket list!
But we sucked it up and still managed to make our Kenyan getaway as memorable as possible.

Here are my 14 best things to do in Mombasa.

1) Take a visit to the beach. (My favourite thing to do!) Don’t just just go to the nearest, go and explore as many as possible. We visited Mombasa Beach, which I knew wouldn’t be my favourite, but any way my brain could experience seeing water, was good enough for me. I was open to it. 15 minutes away from our apartment was Bamburi beach which we didn’t get to visit due to us running out of time but there were better things to come! If you’re lucky, you might have enough time to visit Diani!

2) Visit Moonshine Beach Bar. Now Moonshine is open throughout the day until late at night. We decided to have dinner there one night and the food was good. There’s music, pool and even dancers on the beach, but beware, as they sell alcohol, children are not allowed in. Nevertheless, we had a good delicious meal and a great game of pool.

3) Visit Mombasa City. There’s no way you can visit Mombasa without visiting the city for a tour. We took a taxi which costed us 1500 shilling ( we knew that was way too much, but we were way too tired.) On the way back we squeezed into a tuktuk for 500! Take a tuktuk and save your money! During our visit to the city, we visited Fort Jesus the Elephant tusks, and also explored Old Town where we shopped in the markets and picked up some fresh fruits, vegetables and spices.
We passed the infamous Mombasa train station but we didn’t have enough time for a train ride, something I really wanted to do. I’d suggest giving it a try even  if you visit somewhere fairly close by.
5) Go on a safari. But not the safari everyone else does. Make yours special. Choose Martin! Martin was a wonderful host, we opted for the short safari at Shimba Hills and this included the beautiful visit to the magical Sheldrick Falls Waterfall. This excursion was amazing, but you must go with Martin – he’s honestly the best!

6) Visit the SOS Children’s villages. I was devastated I wasn’t able to visit this time, but I had been before in Gambia which I thoroughly enjoyed. SOS children’s villages was near to our apartment, so if you’re lucky enough to be situated close by, do give it a visit with some donations.

7) Visit a hairdresser… and get braids for a fraction of the cost you’d normally pay in the U.K or U.S. Mum got braids for under £17! I was quoted about £6 for cornrows but unfortunately I was ill and didn’t recover in time to get them done. But check out Mum’s hair below. We visited the hair salon in the Nyali Center.

8) Visit Fort Jesus. If you happen to go to the city centre, visiting Fort Jesus is a must. Most people rush down to visit the Elephant Tusks, but Fort Jesus is so rich in history that you’ll be devastated if you miss it!

9) Wild Waters! This was supposed to be my son’s birthday surprise but we didn’t get to visit due to us running out of time, I would strongly advise you. Don’t leave this one out. Especially if your apartment doesn’t have a pool.

10) Visit the Nyali Centre. There’s so much to see and do, eat and see! There’s restaurants and a pleasure mall. Somewhere you could eat out, get your hair done and shop all at the same place. Also nice for a walk, and even to take pictures. If it’s not too far from where you’re staying. Why not walk it… because you will surely be charged tourist charges in a tuktuk.
