Travelling to Kenya? Try The Magical City of Mombasa

So, it was definitely time to return to the Motherland, and this time, I decided on somewhere new. Somewhere I had not been before… and I chose Kenya. I had my eye on Kenya for years, but it was December 2025 that the Lord said “At the right time, I the Lord will make it happen!” and so HE did.

Things were tight so I hadn’t saved as well as I usually do, but we booked our tickets to Nairobi, and then our connecting flight which was with Kenya Airways to Mombasa. I chose Mombasa as I’m a lover of beach destinations.

We spent 8 days in Mombasa and 2 days in Nairobi. Initially our flight was booked with AirFrance, and although they are far from my favourite, they were offering the best deals at the time of the booking. Our original flight was from London to Paris, then our connecting flight was from Paris to Nairobi. We also had another flight to catch from Nairobi to Mombasa, which was just under an hour.

Kicking OfF With a Bad Start

While we were getting ready to leave, we waited patiently for our Uber to arrive – which came 45 minutes early… and left, charging me £8. That was the beginning of our ‘From Bad to Worse list’. We booked another Uber and when we were ready, we waited outside until it arrived. When we got into our Uber, I received a text message and re-read some emails Air France had just sent me…

Our second flight (From Paris to Nairobi) had been cancelled.

So we proceeded to make our way to the airport to catch our first flight to Paris, as we were expecting our second flight to be from Paris, and the first flight was still booked to go ahead. We thought it would just be a delayed connecting flight, but no… it got worse.

We arrived at Heathrow Terminal 4, waiting for an update. After about 30 minutes we received a message to say that we had been booked onto another flight that was booked for 8pm! (bear in mind it was 3AM!) We didn’t know what to do, especially as we had just paid £25 for our Uber to take us to the airport. We contacted Air France, and asked if they would put us up in the nearest hotel for the next 12 hours and they said No. It was freezing, we were starving and tired.

Only Time Will Tell…

To make matters worse, a little later, we received another email to say that our flight was now leaving from London to Addis Ababa! (Ethiopia). We were informed we were no longer flying with Air France, we were flying with Air Ethiopia instead.

An airline I was not too keen on using, and that meant we had to travel to Terminal 2 instead. Things were increasingly getting worse and I was beginning to get frustrated. We weren’t offered any food, drinks, or somewhere warm to stay, like a hotel. Nothing for the inconvenience.

We travelled to Terminal 2 and decided to wait there. Anxiety was quickly kicking in, and I was in the bathroom every other hour. We were nervous, frustrated, and excited all in one – but utterly disappointed with Air France once again.

Stay tuned to read our full in depth review on Air Ethiopia, and find out later why I call Kenya magical!
